Infectonator! and our excessive obsession with zombies

Infectonator!

After we released Infectonator! I realized something…We (and by we, I mean…me) have an excessive obsession with zombies! The last three games that we’ve designed and made has got something to do with zombies, either killing zombies in a side-scrolling lawn mower-esque maneuver or turning people to zombies in a retro style simulator…and I don’t think that this obsession is going away anytime soon. However I’d like to try making other kinds of games that doesn’t involve zombies in any way…hopefully soon

On other things, we are going to finish makin Infectonator! : World Domination Edition soon. But before we do, I’d like to know what do you like to see implemented in this game. Please let me know by leaving a comment below!

Yeah. The game was awesome. Just needed to be about 50 times longer. ;)

Sand-Box mode?
Or like an infinity mode, spawning people from four spots in the corners?

I don’t really know what would make this game… ANY better.
[Source being as awesome as it was.]

Really, just add a few challenge modes and a playground mode where I can spawn my little ‘Soon to be Zombies!’ and I would be more than happy. Of course making the game longer would be FANTASMIC!

Love the game, making it longer is a good start, couple of specific tweaks I might like to see:

Well, obviously being able to play longer then 60 seconds would be good.
Maybe a way to buy more time, at least from this edition.

Something that’d be …’realistic’, would be people who shoot, have thier bullets kill other people if they’re in the line of fire.
Hell, even have them group up, and an arguement breaks out among them of who gets to be mayor of ‘we’re fucking screwedville’
Maybe come up with ways to develop uberzombies to help siege the mall.

Spade103

commented on December 9, 2009 at 4:49 pm

I think many more levels, and larger levels would be great.

More upgrades, maybe implement a chance of a special zombie spawning (Kind of like Left 4 Dead!) and have that upgradeable.

Level Select

Sandbox mode where you could select an arena, set how many humans there will be, how many armed humans etc. and then use your abilities unlocked from Campaign mode to mess around. Also, PLEASE continue to allow retrying of levels, so if the people cant beat it, they can keep trying and rack up the money from each attempt to put towards skills to beat it.

Level elements like barricades, traffic, (Barricades degrade after damage taken, and traffic will kill your zombies if they run out carelessly, just don’t make it too dense!)

Another mode would be cool if you could control your zombies after they spawn, like an RTS. But, separate from the Campaign, because the current formula is working great.

Those are just some ideas that i pulled out of my bum, Thanks!

    Those are terrible ideas.
let alone the IP issues and legal problems, the different games have different settings and types for a reason. Let the different games be.

    Spade103

commented on December 21, 2009 at 11:54 am

Legal problems, hurr im a durr. How many companies do you know that go around harassing flash game makers about copyrights. Way to fail.

Spade103

commented on December 9, 2009 at 4:53 pm

OH! One more thing!

You should make some special stages centered around settings of other games!

Multi-stage Mercy Hospital with Bill, Zoey, Francis and Louis spawning randomly (Only one per level though) and make them a bit more resilient than normal civvies, kind of like the military

African Villages or Mansions with Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield etc in their respective environments (And, of course, Leon)

Just as fun little bonus stages every 5-10 levels, making the objective to infect these individuals, maybe to unlock new upgrades? eh? eh?

Don’t CHANGE anything, just take away the time restriction and ADD a couple of levels. Don’t take away, just add.

hey, while this is a good game and that i would like to see the world domination series, i would like to comment on this survey.

in my opinion, this is not a good survey. You face a voluntary response bias, which also leads to an undercoverage of the sampling population (people who played this game). For a more constructive survey, a random number generator should be used in the game itself to pick players to leave a comment, which effectively gets rid of the undercoverage and response biases. However, this method faces a nonresponse bias, but it is better than having all the other 3.

i would like to see a time counter that could be improved maybe per 5 sec each time, or at least the time counter gives you extra time pending on extra zombie you have in compared to how many you needed to get in a given level. or simply have 15 sec per level …i dunno just more time would be nice.

oh btw the game is awesome lol

also maybe something you can buy where the zombies can use guns if they were using guns when alive and the bullets are infected.

exploding zombies that infect others. have it set up like a perk like thing.

animals zombiefieable.

extra contamination attempt per level

Needs larger levels, more levels, more upgrades, higher maxes for upgrades, a couple different soundtracks during gameplay, sandbox mode, custom levels, online scores.

The game feels like a demo. Not being forced out of it after 60 seconds would be great.

Mind making the popups smaller and/or nonexistent in the next incarnation?
It gets really old really fast trying to pick up all the coins when there’s a big honking popup blocking a quarter of the level…

I love this game, but it’s way too fun to be this short; please make it longer.

You could give time bonuses, offer a sandbox mode, or eliminate the current time model in place of a countdown clock before a containment team (a different form of hero – hard to infect) arrives to eliminate the zombies (ie. a low infection rate before the containment team arrives would end the game quicker). You could also offer viral mutation upgrades that allow you to re-infect the population(it would give you a chance to attack the containment teams).

Again, this is a great game, but 60 seconds isn’t enough time.

Leon

commented on December 10, 2009 at 7:51 pm

How about a simulation mode! In other words, you take one (or more) zombies that are infected and have them going around trying to infect other people. People will either panic and not know what to do or be survivalist and perform strategies like join groups and being calm while trying to fight zombies. I believe there should be setting that adjust zombie aggression or how people react(chaos, panic, normal, survival expert etc.) I believe there should be a full simulated city and no timer for zombies before they die (simulation mode only)How about also adding different variations of zombies and people. Would you think there are some zombies that are more resistant to attacks then other or faster then others and same goes with people, wouldn’t they have like baseball bats or stuff like that? I’ll get back to you on ideas.

gabe

their should be no time limit cause it got restraining after a few time thru. also a lot of levels!

max100

commented on December 10, 2009 at 11:02 pm

how about ”the survival” mode you command some people trying to escape zombie attack you can get more people like citizens, cops, swat, army, etc etc.. and you must kill all zombies by upgrading your people like accuracy, speed, power(i dont mean that the bullets do more damige just like punch a zombie in a face :) ) and making you people immune (the people can only die but will not be zombies it makes easier for a large group of humans) so how about that?

DarkWolf

commented on December 10, 2009 at 11:38 pm

I think the humans should be more organised and the game less “arcadey”. I was thinking about a Last Stand 2 esque game, but on a grander scale (like you have to attack forts/towns) and ofcourse you being the attacker. More freeform things like which town to attack and special infected could come a long way indeed!

DarkWolf

commented on December 10, 2009 at 11:38 pm

Oh, forgot to add: Humans are entrenched ofcourse, fighting the horde with militairy/surviving police squads!

Dr. Phill

Sandbox mode. A mode without an end, which gets more and more fun, the more you progress through the game. (Like upgrades, people and such)

Map Creation. Making your own playable map, with walls, cars, people, animals, trees, trashcans, roads, kind of like an actual map editor for a paid game.

Thanks for creating such an awesome game.

Hey loved the game can not wait for the World domination edition! :D One thing I would like to see is maybe a level editor and somehow a way to share them like a code or something! :D

simo

commented on December 12, 2009 at 12:26 am

this is one of the best minigames of the year! i wish you could improve it more and more! (it would be cool to buy some kind of silent virus, that can infect people without being noticed at first! that heroes are really bastard!)

simo

commented on December 12, 2009 at 12:32 am

also would be cool to have some kind of personality in the zombies… maybe some kind of experience points that can last through the levels… would be cool to grow some kind of superzombie that can be released only when there is the need (if we know that in a level there is a very bastard hero for example)

Dennis

the ability to make the blood of the zombies contagious even after they die!

Bum Fluff Nappies

commented on December 12, 2009 at 9:57 am

I think you need to make it alot longer with alot more powerups and loads more levels and make it without a time limit

Bum Fluff Nappies

commented on December 12, 2009 at 9:59 am

also also also, make lots of different kinds of zombies so some need different weapons to kill them, like in the 60 second one you can buy the xplode thing, you should make different ones, and you need different ones for different zombies, and you could make like 2 different diseases for harder levels and you need to spread the right disease to the right people otherwise it wont affect them :]

thor'shax

commented on December 12, 2009 at 10:33 am

exploding zombies would be cool but what about making the dead bodies of zombies infectious? you know a living person walked over them and then say 5 seconds later became a zombie? i do like the current game though and hope you continue past world domination

I think time bonuses, new maps, and more time, scaled to mor levels, as many said, would be great. Being able to spend money before the first wave could be good, but it would turn out to be a little gamey, after some playthroughs, or after someone discovered a good tactic.
Taking out the time limit entirely, on the other hand, would simply defeat the point of the game, turning it too easy to be replayable, IMHO. If there is an endless mode, it would be okay to not have a time limit, just humans that get tougher and tougher; but taking it entirely out of the game would make it a little /too/ easy – the whole challenge of the game is positioning the infection well, and knowing what kind of upgrades are better in what moment.
IMHO, at least.

that’s a great game the way it is – difficult, yes, but replayable as hell too. Thank you for your work!

The Grand Poobah

commented on December 13, 2009 at 7:32 am

My only suggestion is to make it endless.
I would presume that the number of ordinary people on the screen is dictated by a formula, with the variable being the level you’re at, right?
Well, how about making it so that for each time you fail to meet the objective, the level goes down, and you lose all the things you upgraded last time you went up a level.
If you beat the objective, you may level up, and then go on to a harder mode.

However, the timed mode should be the main mode, and this one should be something of a subsidary mini-game, i.e. Can you survive all the way to the eventual killscreen where everything would die?
I mean… surely a formula based game would eventually be impossible to finish, or ridiculously easy, with an infinite number of people on the screen, with nigh on instant infections of everybody.
I dunno.

Hmm.
Maybe humans can get more resistant each round [I think this was already there, I just didn't notice it, since the virus is a little bit overpowered.], and then eventually at the very end, humans are immune.

Okay so this is the big problem for me:

Money and the level ending. If you do good before you have magnet you get psychotically screwed by the game right now. By that I mean you deploy an amazing zombie swarm, it sweeps the level and you don’t have enough time to grab money before the level ends.

So what do you do to fix it?

two things:

1. The level doesn’t end till the last zombie dies OR

2. Add an “End Level” Option. So that if you know you’re going to lose you can just kill the level. Still lose the time but that way if you wind up with just zombies you can wait.

Too many times I would clear a few of the early levels and just miss out on ALLL the money, which CRIPPLES you in the long run. Which is unfortunate cause it essentially means the game becomes a “Play slow early on and then nuke everyone in the end”

Which is my only other complaint. Later levels pretty much turn into waiting to do an infection, then bombing a bunch of the agents/heroes so your zombie horde can do its thing. I really think the bomb detracts from the game. Instead add a secondary infection burst and create an “Infection strength” type of stat that you can nudge up to potentially turn them into zombies with your first or second burst.

Otherwise the game is SERIOUSLY addictive and I love it a lot.

    George R

commented on December 13, 2009 at 9:56 am

    ALSO:

The initial virus spawn getting eaten by an Agent/Hero is awful. If the heroes/agent’s can’t be turned by rhe initial burst then make it just pass through them. Too often do they sweep in or you click just the wrong spot and you lose 1-3 seconds because they consumed all the virus dots.

Also I’m with the rest of the crowd – Please remove the Medal/Achievement box more often it causes problems than any sort of joy. In fact any time one pops up I see it as a punishment or momentary difficulty increase, or worse yet a neutering of money gaining. Horribly designed.

artsygamer

commented on December 13, 2009 at 4:22 pm

i would say making it easier to reach the 13th level, but also making it get to a bigger scale sooner. like eventually you get to a point where you move from state to state, country to country, and so on.

Love the game, hate that time limit and auto-level end. I’m thankful for the menu-screen gathering ability, that helps a lot.

Either pause the timer so players can collect all the gold, or make it auto-collect at the end of a level, I always hate that I miss out on over half the gold because I use fast zombies. (I don’t like being forced into one strategy, though I’ll spam one I like ^^;)

As far as stuff to put in WD mode goes: Hazmat ‘cleaner’ teams coming in after a time limit sounds fun; a sort of RTS-like horde control screen outside the individual levels sounds kick-awesome too; zombies with guns (infect bullets or not); special weapons (HMG, sniper rifle, RPG, etc.); and maybe some vehicles too.

Spawning special zombie types would be better than the grenade (why are zombies using grenades in the first place?): Juggernaut (big beefy and slow, can knock down walls); Assassin (stealthy and targets the most dangerous humans first, jumps and runs faster, longer life span); Blaster (launches biot-oxins that melt terrain and spawn bio-bomb zombies that explode when killed or their life timer runs out); Siren (lures heroes to their death, hubba hubba, otherwise identical to a normal zombie); Mole (chubby and slow, long life timer, digs tunnels and pit traps, other zombies and heroes can use mole-tunnels to travel); Overlord (only one per level, no life timer and regenerates, high cost to purchase spawn upgrade, forms from four normal zombies, allows the player to set congregation nodes that normal zombies are attracted to, can direct moles to dig specific configurations of tunnels and pits)

Well unliited days is a must have. I agree with zombie types not not completely, i like the simplicity of the game. Just add like a power up that makes a x% of zombies u spawn get to spit zombie turning goo. (ranged zombies) and nother power that maxes x% of zombies that spawn dmg resistant. something like that. I also think your initial click should be further upgradable, because in those hero heavy levels there was like no way to make a good starting impact.

Zeo7

commented on December 14, 2009 at 8:32 am

hi, well first of all EXELENT GAME.
so for next version i would add as many say zombie tipes but make it not that complex, maybe as stated above them to be random or something,
second DO not remove the time limit, make it say 2 min aprox, the whole objective of the game is to infect the most in the least time, then add another mode thats unlimited but the main must have time limit.
choosing were to attack would be great like a mini map and you choose wich city that be cool more upgrades maybe make them like a skill tree, somthing to make your zombies priorize some targets( so they kill al normal then hero or go straight for the hero)
o and somthing cool would be to have like if you had more zombies than a hard treshold for every zombie above that in the next map you get to spawn that ammount of zombies where you click, maybe at start or like a granade because you nedd some extra zombies somtimes to get those heroes

thats it.
thank you for making this game and the others, I have loved evry single game of yours, and dont worry about only zombi games, zombi games are great.

arn’t i just full of ideas?
well the game was creative and unique so good job
also perhaps tanks methinks?
